CITY ART CENTRE (East Market Street, Edinburgh) China Behind The Lens Sat 5 July - Sun 14 Sept (This is a non-SCA event.) China: A Photographic Portrait is an exhibition consisting of 650 photographs from the Museum of Art in Guangzhou. Taken together they create a stunning panorama of the world's most populous nation. The exhibition is divided into four categories - existence, relations, desire, time - and the photographs are portrayed against the background of social revolutions. Going beyond the superficial effects of modernisation on China's major cities, the photographers have also documented the impact of change upon the individual. A series of associated talks and events on aspects of Chinese life is taking place in conjunction with the exhibition.
A new addition to the exhibition is a collection of short films which provide a further insight into the cultural and social life of a country which is home to a fifth of the world’s population.
