Ministerial Endorsement for Schools Competition

The Scotland-China Association and the Tom Murray Memorial Trust were delighted to receive, at the end of March, an endorsement from Linda Fabiani, Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture,  in support of their 2008 Competition for Scottish Primary Schools, ‘Beijing: Northern Capital’.

Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture, Linda Fabiani said:

“The Scottish Government places a real value on our growing partnership with China and I’m delighted that Scotland’s school children are being encouraged to engage and better understand our links with modern China and its capital Beijing.”

“This stimulating competition is designed to encourage pupils to learn more about Beijing and its people, culture, art, music, building and environment. I hope it will enthuse, inform and inspire our young people about a country whose influence in the world is growing exponentially. But most of all this should be a fun learning experience which not only captures the imagination of our school pupils but serves to forge closer links between Scotland and China. I would like to encourage all schools to take part.”

The competition is being run in co-operation with The Burrell Collection, Glasgow Museums and with the support of China Now in Scotland.

At the end of March, primary schools from across Scotland, from as far north as Inverness and Aberdeenshire, east to Dundee and Angus, south to Selkirk and Dumfries and Galloway to Campbeltown and Renfrewshire in the west, had registered interest in entering the competition.

Entries must be registered in advance of 12 May 2008 and the work must be received at The Burrell Collection, Chinese and Oriental Civilizations Department between 12 and 16 May.

The entries will be judged in the week 19 to 23 May and we are delighted that the Minister, Linda Fabiani has agreed to be one of the judging panel.

The prize-giving will be held at the Burrell Collection on Saturday 14 June at 1.15 pm and the presentations will be made by Eddie McGuire, the well-known Scottish composer and member of the Whistlebinkies.   Linda Fabiani, Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture will also attend the prize-giving and say a few words.
