Edinburgh branch programme, 2016-2017

Here are the details of the Edinburgh branch programme. All SCA members and friends are very welcome, and we look forward to seeing you.

Events usually take place on the second Tuesday of each month, unless otherwise stated, at The Meeting House, 7 Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh EH1 2JL. Tea & biscuits will be served from 7pm (a voluntary donation is requested) and the talk will begin at 7:30pm. Anyone is welcome to attend our meetings free of charge.

Ed Craig, Deputy Director and Head of Enterprise and Innovation at Edinburgh University’s Center for Carbon Innovation (ECCI), will talk about the ECCI’s links to China and Hong Kong.

Ann Campbell will chronicle her travels in China and Tibet in 1991 as she searched for her grandfather’s burial place. Her grandfather and his father both worked as doctors in China, her father dying of typhoid in 1939, soon after war broke out. She travelled up river and then by public transport, equipped only with a letter in Chinese stating what she was looking for.

Justin Crozier will speak about his “26 Letters from Shanghai” included in China: An Insider's Guide, Letters from a Changing Nation, authored by Chris Ruffle and his team at Open Door Capital Management, where Justin was Head of Communications in Shanghai. His talk will focus on aspects of Chinese culture (e.g., the effect of the one-child policy) and the changes he observed in Shanghai. .

Iain Scott, Sixth Form Head at Stewart’s Melville College and the Mary Erskine School, will talk to us about his recently published book, "The Creation of Modern China: The Rise of a World Power", part of the Anthem Perspectives in History series targeted at high-achieving A Level, International Baccalaureate, and Advanced Placement pupils, first-year undergraduates, and an intellectually curious audience. He has used recent research to explore how China has been transformed from an economic and political backwater at the start of the 20th century to its current pre-eminent position one hundred years later.

Augustine United Church, George IV Bridge, 11am – Branch AGM. This will be followed by a talk ‘Because it’s there’ by Tim Bradshaw who climbed Everest with Chinese mountaineers from the Tibetan side. Details of registration and lunch will be circulated later..
