As part of the 2014 "Homecoming" celebrations, a Diaspora Tapestry is to be created. It will involve 25 countries, including China, and will document the Scottish diaspora. This means the movement of Scots to and from Scotland as well as other nationalities.
The stories of the diaspora will be told in five to ten embroidered panels per country. The designs will be stitched onto linen by volunteers in the diaspora communities, and here in Scotland. The tapestry will be launched as part of the Year of the Homecoming Celebrations in 2014 and will also travel around Scotland and to the countries taking part.
The Scottish Diaspora Tapestry is the creation of Prestoungrange Arts Festival in Prestonpans with key support from Barons Courts of Prestoungrange & Dolphinstoun, hundreds of stitchers and Scotophiles globally, CreativeScotland, the Scottish Government’s Diaspora Division, EducationScotland, VisitScotland and EventScotland.
In 2014, communities in Scotland, linked to those abroad, will host the diaspora communities for a combined celebration of Scottish connections and heritage. The exhibited tapestry will serve as a backdrop for other creative means of telling the stories of the diaspora such as music, dance and drama.
The project is looking for people, keen to stitch and to help share and document their stories. We will be visiting the diaspora and 'homeland' communities to hold stitching workshops, collect stories and encourage participation in the design process.
More information about the tapestry project can be found on their website. Any Scottish diaspora community across the globe, or Chinese diaspora community in Scotland, can get involved, if they have a fine story to tell, and embroiderers to create the artwork.
