Edinburgh branch programme, 2015-2016

The 2015-2016 programme for meetings of the Edinburgh Branch of the SCA has now been confirmed and is given below. All SCA members and friends are very welcome, and we look forward to seeing you.

Events usually take place on the second Tuesday of each month, unless otherwise stated, at The Meeting House, 7 Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh EH1 2JL. Tea & biscuits will be served from 7pm (a voluntary donation is requested) and the talk will begin at 7:30pm. Anyone is welcome to attend our meetings free of charge.

In addition, 2016 is the 50th anniversary of the SCA's founding in 1966, and we are developing various special events and activities to celebrate this. More details will be provided on this website in due course.

Shen Xiao Tong, East Asian Studies Librarian at the University of Edinburgh, will give a talk entitled “Early Chinese Students in Scotland”. The talk will provide a survey of early Chinese students who were the forerunners of the several thousand Chinese students in Scotland today, including Yan Baohang, a student at Edinburgh University in the 1920s, who passed vital intelligence to the Soviet Union about the precise date of the German attack in 1941 and about Japanese military deployments on the Sino–Russian border in 1944.

Julian Ward of the University of Edinburgh will give a talk entitled "On research of the Qing dynasty world map".

Tuesday 12 April 2016

Dan Alderson will give a talk entitled "Decoding the 推背图 (Tuibeitu) - A journey through China's past and future". The Tuibeitu is a purported Tang dynasty text made up of 60 pictures and accompanying cryptic predictions that describe key moments or turning points in Chinese history. Dan will take a light-hearted look at the text, figuring out the references in the pictures and predictions, and seeing if we can work out what the future holds for China !

This will be the Branch AGM. The business meeting will be followed by a talk by Edinburgh University Emeritus Professor Kenneth King, author of China's aid and soft power in Africa.

This will be the National AGM, including special events to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Details of this event will be announced nearer the time.

Dr Sabrina Yu, Newcastle University, will speak on 'Going back to the hometown - a new root-searching movement in contemporary Chinese independent cinema'. The venue will be confirmed nearer the time.

Dr Liang Hongling, University of Glasgow, will speak on 'The Enlightenment, Sino-French Institute and Tel Quel - looking at three moments in Sino-French knowledge dynamics'. The venue will be confirmed nearer the time.

Glasgow branch programme, 2015-2016

The 2015-2016 programme for meetings of the Glasgow Branch of the SCA has now been confirmed and is given below. All SCA members and friends are very welcome, and we look forward to seeing you.

Glasgow Branch meetings are usually held on the last Tuesday of each month in the Garnethill Multicultural Centre (GMC), 21 Rose Street, Glasgow G3 6RE. Doors open at 7.00pm, tea and biscuits are served from 7.15 pm (cost £1) with talks commencing at 7.30 pm. Events are free to SCA members and £1.50 (£1.00 concession) to non-members.

For the Glasgow Branch December meeting you are invited to join us for a Chinese dinner. A booking has been made at 7 pm on Tuesday 15th December at the Sichuan House Restaurant, 345-349 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow for members and their guests. If you would like to attend please inform Robert Colvil by email by Sunday 13th December, so he can let the restaurant know final numbers. We hope you'll be able to join us for this end of year and seasonal celebration. The anticipated charge for dinner is expected to be about £20 per person, excluding wine or other alcoholic drinks.
